Let’s face it, cleaning up the yard is one of the least favorite things about dog ownership.  But that does not mean it isn’t important!

Dog waste is not good for fertilizer.  Unlike cows, dogs’ main food is not grass.  Dog food is high in protein; when your dog’s digestive system processes that protein, it creates a lot of nitrogen.  You might notice that the grass around your dog’s waste is a little greener.  That is due to the waste starting to break down and release nitrogen.

Unfortunately, dog waste can take up to a year to fully decompose.  Releasing too much nitrogen into the lawn, enough to cause nitrogen burn.    Pet waste can also carries bacteria such as E. Coli, giardia, salmonella, parvo, worms, viruses, and parasites.  You and your family also use the same yard as your pet.  While it might not be visible on the top later of grass the waste is not fully gone.
